Palm tree trimming in Pasadena: what comes off
Palm tree trimming in Pasadena takes off what's dead or about to drop and leaves the living crown. Palms are trimmed, not pruned like a broadleaf tree: there are no limbs to thin, only fronds, flower and seed stalks, and the old leaf bases on the trunk. A good trim covers:
- Brown and hanging dead fronds, cut close but not into the trunk
- Seed and flower stalks, before the dates or seeds drop on the patio, the pool or the car
- A shaggy 'skirt' of dead fronds hanging below the crown on fan palms
- Fronds resting on a roof, a gutter or the service wire to the house
- Loose old leaf bases that would fall on their own

How much to cut: leave the green
Leave the green fronds on. They feed the palm, and stripping a crown to a few upright leaves (often called a hurricane cut) takes away its food and its shade without making the palm safer. UC IPM's palm guidance warns against the heavy cuts some trimmers sell as tidy: “sculpting pineapples, and skinning or peeling trunks of old leaf bases, which typically create large wounds that facilitate pathogen entry.”
Skinning a palm trunk
Skinning means cutting or peeling the old leaf bases off the trunk to leave it smooth. It's mostly cosmetic. On a fan palm it's a choice with a cost; on a Canary Island date palm it opens wounds that a fatal disease can use, so leave the leaf bases on unless there's a real reason, such as rats nesting in a thick shag.
Canary Island date palms and clean tools
Fusarium wilt kills Canary Island date palms, and in the landscape it “nearly always spreads on pruning tools, especially chain saws,” according to UC IPM. The fungus enters cut leaf stalks and, on severely pruned or skinned palms, exposed trunk tissue. One dirty saw can carry it from a sick palm to a healthy one down the street.

A palm that has grown past the point of sensible trimming, or is dead or leaning, is a removal: see palm tree removal in Pasadena and palm tree removal cost. For broadleaf trees, see tree trimming in Pasadena and tree trimming cost.
Palms near lines, roofs and fire zones
Palms near power lines are a utility job first. Pasadena Water and Power warns residents never to trim near a line, and the service wire that runs from the pole to the house is the owner's to keep clear; see tree trimming near power lines. In Pasadena Fire's inspection areas, dead fronds count as the dead material inspectors want gone, and branches and fronds must stay 10 feet from chimneys and 5 feet above roofs; see brush clearance in Pasadena. Palms in the parkway are City trees; see Pasadena street trees.
